DURGA DAS BASU
BHARAT KA SAMVIDHAN - EK PARICHAY
8th Edition Reprint 2007
T
he late Professor S.A. De Smith of the London School of economics, during the course of his review of the Commentary, pointed out that “there was no readable and dependable book for the general reader interested to be acquainted with the basic features of our constitution.” It was in response to this observation and suggestion that the author brought out his Introduction to the Constitution of India in 1960. It became instantly popular among lawyers and laymen alike. It proved to be very useful to those preparing for competitive examinations for recruitment to Central and State Services. Indeed several universities prescribed the book for courses in Political Science. Comparative Government and Law. It is indeed a matter of credit and pride for the author and the publishers that a Russian Edition of the book was published in 1986 by the Progress Publishers, Moscow. The book in its English edition has been read by one and a half lakh readers which in itself is an enviable record for a law book written for popular reading by general public. It has been published in thirteen editions.
The Hindi translation has also been published by the Prentice Hall of India, the publisher of the original book in English. The printing is very neat and elegant. The book is moderately priced so as to be within the easy reach of those for whom it has been rendered in Hindi. The book under review stands out by its sheer merit, range of topics covered as well as the amount of information given on certain less known and otherwise obscure but very important aspects of the Constitution”.
