his work is meant to be a complete digest on the decisions of the Supreme Court on Criminal Law from the time of its inception in the year 1950. We all know that the law, as declared and interpreted by the Supreme Court, is binding on all the Courts of the land, the exercise by the Court of this power of authoritative interpretation has made an immense impact on every branch of criminal law. The continuity and uniformity of interpretation which has been introduced has resulted in gradually dissolving and setting at rest the prevailing conflict of opinion on various aspects of the law, so that once the law relating to any subject is decided by a judgment of the Supreme Court, it becomes profitless labour to delve into the earlier cases covering the same field of conflict.
It has, therefore, become essential for judges and lawyers alike to have ready at hand a comprehensive digest containing between its two covers all the decisions of the Supreme Court on the entire range of criminal law, and it is this need which this book is intended to serve. It contains every decision of the Court till date on every aspect of criminal law, and covers every criminal enactment which has come under the scrutiny of the Court. Its sole purpose is to enable the reader to find the authority on any proposition as to any law which he requires at minimum expenditure of time and energy, and the new scheme of arrangement which is adopted is meant to serve that end.

In compiling the present Edition, the editors have taken the liberty of re-arranging the material alphabetically topic-wise, case-law had to be re-arranged, new Topics created and some of the old Topics re-arranged. This arrangement has been conceived for the purpose of convenience to the readers and in view of the bulk of case-law that has come up under each of the major topics, each of them deserving separate treatment in a topic by itself. Further, each topic has been divided into several headings and sub-headings or the division of the subject into various headings, heads and sub-heads with alphabetical letters considering the convenience for easy references.

All the references available in various journals are given underneath the name of the case itself. It is hoped that the new arrangement will be appreciated and found more useful as it also caters to the readers getting only local law journals. The Contents have been made thoroughly exhaustive so as to contain every Heading in the text of the book. .

The case-law has been brought up-to-date by including all cases collected till the work was sent to the press. Thus, this work covers case-law of more than five decades from the inception of the Supreme Court of India in 1950 till 2006. No pains have been spared to make this publication as useful as its predecessor, to the Bench and the Bar.

An analysis of the decisions of the Supreme Court during the last 56 Years on Constitutional principles applicable to Criminal Law, the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, the Law of Evidence, Appeals to the Supreme Court, all other Criminal Enactments Central and State and interpretation of criminal statutes.
